@nico: Well, yeah...it was bound to happen...>.>
Here's a nice long rant about what I think about Light. Thank GOD for wonderful Death note debates in FFnet.
To start off, and as everybody should know by now, I support Yagami Light. Though he is ruthless, twisted, and is often called a murderer, he is not all evil.
He had twisted good and evil in his mind. At first it was alright, the whole 'I wish the world was a better place' and all, but as most people probably knows, being a genius kills. There are times when these intellectually gifted people lose the whole morality of a goal- and though the reason is supposedly good, and for the betterment of the world, it is most basically 'The end does not justify the means."
Light wanted Justice to prevail, to reign over the darkened skies that plague the world- metaphorically speaking, the crimes and injustices that were taking over. His drive to cleanse the earth of sins were to the point of never giving up, his way of getting things right (to his taste, perhaps) started to look less fair...and more 'I will do anything to get what I want'.
He's got a pure heart when he started off. Never did he once disobey his parents, pick fights, break the rules, etc.- but he's not perfect, please remember that. He isn't the humble type, and being introduced to the Death note had given him purpose that went overboard.
But he was bored, wasn't he? I would've done the same thing, seeing crimes all over the TV is driving me nuts. If there was only a way Divine Intervention is possible...but anyway, I wouldn't have been able to go so far as to almost getting the world to his side, and face it people, if he hadn't turned into a cold and manipulative person, he wouldn't be able to get that far too.
The scenario's like this. L would most likely be able to find him out. And if ever that happened, he'd come clean. There would be protests, of course, but he would surrender nonetheless.
That's why him being a good person wouldn't add spice to the anime.
AND! Light was the kind of person who would do anything to achieve his goals. He wouldn't give up just because the only way to getting it doesn't match up to how he rolls. (Man, how I wish I had a way to roll.) Remember when L asked him if he could play Misa to get information on Kira when he was brainwashed? He simply said something like, "I'm sorry Ryuzaki, but I can never play with a woman's heart. That goes against my code."
When he was innocent, he never thought of lying and manipulating other people to get what he wanted...but the whole Kira thing cost his life, so how could he stay alive and become successful in making the world a better place if he did not control and fool other people? If he was truly god, he needn't have done that, but that's the case here. Light isn't god. And humans usually have to rely on their abilities. Sucks, right?
So that's my case. Thank you for listening. I shall try to catch my breath before I start ranting again.
