It all started as a normal New Year's eve. Supposedly, high school people shouldn't have classes during New Year, but there's still this one girl who has to read. BECAUSE SHE'S A NERD! Get it? Now, her mom, she wants her to stop reading and go to a party. I sure would've loved it if my mom told me that same thing. But all Gabriella wants to do is spend her new year's eve alone in that room, because when everyone's gone she'll probably be having fun in there. Privately.
Somewhere else, there's this father and son who don't look alike at all, playing basketball. They're all sweaty and stuff, because they've been training HARD. The son is practicing a turn-around jump shot. He's not a very good player, and he can't do trick shots that would look totally pro, so he's just practicing jump shots. Then the mother comes in asking them to shower up and go to the party, because apparently, it's okay to take a shower if you're sweaty all the way up to the hair in your armpits. Maybe this is the mother's evil plot to kill the boy and his father. I'm loving this story already. But before the party, the son asks for just one more shot. He does that exact same shot we've seen before, because it's the only way for him to score. He isn't a very good basketball player, remember?
So... we cut to the party. The writer of this movie probably hates me, because the sweaty basketball boy is still alive, even after his mother's evil plan. And it turns out that nerdy girl is in this same party. The two get "randomly" picked because they were both introduced prior to this party. They sing "Start of Something New", which is a COMPLETELY random song and does not represent the thoughts of these two main characters at all. It's true. It may look like they've got their fingers all over each other's hot bodies, but in truth, the nerdy girl doesn't like boys. This is all part of her master plan, but we'll find out about that later. My observations indicate that Troy is a very good stage performer. And they also indicate that the karaoke must've been very expensive. Our karaoke only plays .midi files, but it seems that this one can also play mp3 files.
After the song, they introduce themselves. Sweaty basketball boy is named "Troy", and nerdy girl is named "Gabriella". But I'm still calling Troy "SBB". And Gabriella is a man in a girl's body, so it's only appropriate to call her "Gabrielle".
They talk outside, with Gabrielle saying that she used to be on church choir because she's too nervous to sing solo. We also find out that SBB has never sung in public before, although he seems to do second voices extremely well, and he seems to know how to perform well. This can only mean that SBB has natural talent in singing on stage, and he should quit his basketball career.
After the talk about the quality of their singing, they become silent. SBB can't speak because he's nervous, I guess. Gabrielle doesn't speak because she doesn't like SBB. They remain silent until the people count down how many seconds until New Year. Three, two, one... And Gabrielle is overjoyed because she finally has an excuse to get away from SBB. "So... I guess I better go and wish my mom a happy new year," she says. She was about to leave, but SBB had to interrupt saying "Me, too." And to continue annoying her, he speaks in nervous style. "I mean, not your mom. My mom. And dad."
That's nice, now would you please get off me, Gabrielle thinks, but keeps everything to herself. Again, she was going to leave, but Troy foils her attempts again. "I'll call you!" he says. "I'll call you tomorrow! Here, put your number in!"
SBB takes a picture of Gabrielle, and she rides along thinking that SBB will show it to his hot girl classmates. "You too" Gabrielle requests. Now, all Gabrielle wanted was his number. So that she could ask the numbers of his hot girl classmates. Secretly, it annoyed the hell out of her when SBB took his picture in her cell phone, too.
Finally, it was the last straw for Gabrielle. She was going to leave despite any of SBB's words. So she quickly walked out, leaving SBB talking to himself. Poor guy...
